Eskom weekend update
Eskom says it expects to meet demand for the coming weekend, although the power system remains constrained for the rest of the summer.
“The demand in electricity tends to decrease from Friday, going into the weekend. The capacity available from Friday, through to Sunday, is therefore expected to meet forecast demand,” it said in an update on Friday (23 January).
“Any extra load or faults in the system may necessitate the need to go into load shedding.”
Eskom called on all South Africans to pull together over the next few months and use electricity sparingly by “living lightly” this summer.
Weekend forecast:
- Friday 23 January: The capacity available to meet this evening’s peak demand is 30,549MW (including open cycle gas turbines) while demand is forecast at 29,603MW.
- Saturday 24 January: The capacity available to meet that evening’s peak demand is 28,785MW (including open cycle gas turbines) while demand is forecast at 27,841MW.
- Sunday 25 January: The capacity available to meet that evening’s peak demand is 28,497MW (including open cycle gas turbines) while demand is forecast at 27,726MW.
Eskom implemented stage one load shedding on January 9, due to high electricity demand and the unavailability of some of its generating units.
Stage one allows for up to 1000MW of the national load to be shed, stage two for up to 2000MW, and stage three for up to 4000MW.
