Watch: How easy it is to buy and install blue lights in South Africa

 ·30 Jun 2016

An SABC News expose reveals how easy it is to purchase, and illegally install, blue lights on the streets of South Africa.

An undercover investigation by the SABC showed how journalists were able to buy and install blue lights from a motor spares shop in Roodepoort, for a price of only R50.

Blue lights are believed to be easily accessible from China Malls, and are often used by criminals who pose as police officers to dupe citizens.

The SAPS notes that a blue light is illegal for civilian vehicles and may only be fitted on vehicles operated by:

  • Members of the South African Police Service (SAPS) and Municipal Police Services;
  • Traffic officers;
  • Members of the SANDF Military Police

The shop owner explained to the journalist that they merely fit blue lights as requested by the customer. “If the customer wants it, its his problem,” the shop owner said.
