Cell C 99c for real: 2 million and counting

Cell C launched their new prepaid voice product and tariff plan called “99 Cents For Real” on 20 May 2012, and has already exceeded 2 million orders for the product.

“We are currently only just able to match orders for the product which have exceeded 2 million in the first weeks,” said Cell C CEO, Alan Knott-Craig. “It is one of the fastest growing products we have ever launched.”

Many existing Cell C subscribers are also migrating to the ’99 cents for real’ service. “In the first hour, thousands of customers had already migrated to the new product,” said Knott-Craig.

One of the benefits of lower rates to operators is an increase in call volumes. While it is premature to predict this trend (the product has only been available for a week), Knott-Craig said that early indications are very positive.

Vodacom responded to Cell C’s ‘99 cents for real’ product within hours with their own 99c prepaid offering, but to date, MTN and 8ta have not launched competing products.
