ANC tables formal motion for Zuma to step down
At its National Executive Committee meeting this weekend, the ANC has tabled a surprise motion for president Jacob Zuma to be recalled – catching his supporters off guard and sending them into a tailspin, the City Press reports.
Citing inside sources from the NEC meeting, the City Press said that the motion was brought by tourism minister Derek Hanekom on Saturday, leaving the pro-Zuma camp stunned.
Further, there has been lobbying for a secret ballot to take place on the matter – so that the party can get its members’ true views, without fear of retaliation.
However, the motion was deferred to Sunday as many NEC members were not present, and some members walked out of the meeting as not to be a part of any process that could see the president recalled, the paper said.
Zuma supporters who were not at the meeting reportedly jumped into action, climbing onto planes from their respective provinces to attend the meeting today.
Pro-Zuma members are hoping to kill the motion before it even gets to a vote, the City Press said.
The move to table the motion comes a surprise as it has always been understood that Zuma controls a strong majority within the ANC NEC, with many of his supporters in the party also being on ‘his’ payroll in government.
Specifically, it is seen as huge risk to even propose that he step down, as the president still has one final card up his sleeve: a Cabinet reshuffle, which would get rid of all his detractors in government.
