Huawei global revenue boosted by P10 sales in South Africa

Huawei Consumer Business Group said on Thursday that sales revenue for the first six months of 2017 increased by 36.2% year-on-year to 105.4 billion yuan, with South Africa within the top performing countries for global sales.

Smartphone shipments also climbed to 73.01 million, showing a year-on-year increase of 20.6%, the mobile phone maker said.

Huawei said that in Q1, market share rose to 9.8% of the global smartphone market, citing industry analysts IDC. This growth, it said, was driven by a significant increase in sales of mid-range and high-end smartphones in key geographies.

In Greater China, Huawei claimed 22.1% of the market where shipments increased by 24% year-over-year.

Huawei also saw rapid growth in smartphone shipments across Europe, reporting 18% year-over-year growth with particularly robust performances in Central and Eastern and Nordic Europe.

In South Africa, Huawei said it has also increased its market share with growth in the mid- to high-end smartphone market. The technology firm said it continues to focus on its premium flagship line with increase sales and shipments in the P and M series.

“Following European trends our growth has largely been in the P and M series in the $600 price band. We will continue to innovate at the high end and capture premium users,” said Likun Zhao, GM of Huawei Consumer Business Group South Africa.

“The first months of sales of the P10 and P10 Plus have quadrupled as compared the P9. South Africa remains within the top performing countries in Huawei global sales.”

Huawei said its P lite series has recorded strong sales figures over the last two years with shipment into South Africa sitting at over a million units.

Looking ahead, Huawei said it expects to spur continued growth as the company pushes its devices further through innovations in artificial intelligence and machine learning that will drive the new “smart era” forward.
