MTN yet to receive Turkcell court papers
MTN Group says it has noted reports that Turkish mobile phone operator, Turkcell, has re-filed its lawsuit against the local operator in the South Gauteng High Court in Johannesburg.
Shares in MTN climbed 0.5% to R196 in early afternoon trade on the JSE.
Reuters reported that Turkcell had opened the case on Tuesday in the South Gauteng high court in Johannesburg, seeking damages for losses that it said it had incurred.
“At this stage, MTN cannot comment further as we have not received or viewed the court papers,” MTN said in a press statement on Wednesday (27 November)
“Although we don’t have details of the case, MTN continues to believe that there is no legal merit to Turkcell’s claim and will accordingly oppose it.”
Turkcell filed a $4.2 billion lawsuit in Washington last year alleging the Johannesburg-based company used bribery to win a mobile license in Iran that was first awarded to Turkcell.
The Turkish operator dropped the case in May, citing a recent US Supreme Court ruling that hurt its case.
