MTN fibre-to-the-home prices uncovered
MTN launched commercial proof of concept fibre-to-the-home (FTTH) products at Monaghan Farm on 12 April 2014 – a service which the company says is capable of speeds of up to 100Mbps.
However, when questioned by MyBroadband about the cost of the new service, the group declined to elaborate on any details.
“The pricing offered at Monaghan Farm is exclusive to the residents during this pre-launch period and is not indicative of any future similar offerings by MTN,” it said.
“Fibre-to-the-home requires case-by-case pricing, and it is therefore not possible to determine or speculate pricing in advance of a customised analysis.”

MyBroadband however, reported that it received reliable information detailing the cost associated with the service.
Once-off costs
The installation of an MTN FTTH service in Monaghan Farm is R1,999, with a once-off line provisioning fee of R500.
The cost of a CPE (Customer premises equipment) is R1,000, with the option of an OMT unit at R2,500.
Monthly costs
MTN’s FTTH customers in Monaghan Farm will have to pay three monthly fees to be connected – an access fee, a line speed fee and a data charge.
The monthly access fee, which can be compared with Telkom’s analogue line rental, is R269 per month.
The service is available in speeds ranging between 10Mbps and 100Mbps, priced as follows:
- 10Mbps – R515 per month
- 20Mbps – R650 per month
- 40Mbps – R860 per month
- 100Mbps – R1,660 per month
Users have the option of data packages ranging between 5GB and 500GB, priced as follows:
- 5GB – R35
- 10GB – R60
- 20GB – R90
- 50GB – R210
- 100GB – R385
- 500GB – R1,800
Subscribers who exceed their monthly data charges will be billed an out of bundle rate of R20 per GB.
The MTN FTTH service is available on a 24 month contract.
