MTN Business provides CUT with 5G to enable innovation

 ·1 Nov 2022

MTN Business is excited to join forces with Free State’s Central University of Technology (CUT) to accelerate development at its Bloemfontein and Welkom campuses.

Both parties have signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) which will see MTN implementing 5G solutions and advanced technology to enable innovation on CUT campuses.

MTN was deemed by CUT to be the best partner to accelerate its technology-based vision to become a key innovator on the continent.

This is thanks to MTN’s impressive technological prowess and its unrivalled 5G networking capabilities in South Africa.

The partnership will take the form of a Proof of Concept (POC), which will let MTN Business showcase its ability to advance socio-economic development through innovation, research, and community engagement.

Three-phase approach

Both parties intend to implement solutions in three phases, said Sudipto Moitra, GM- ICT Solutions at MTN business.

For phase one, MTN Business will assess the existing infrastructure on both campuses to determine the best way to upgrade them to the latest 5G technology efficiently and smoothly.

Phase two will then focus on the enhancement of existing use cases, as CUT already has use cases which could be enhanced by MTN’s ability to provide bandwidth and a potential private network.

Finally, phase three will prioritise co-creation with a focus on industry-specific solutions such as, but not limited to, AI offerings, SMART campuses, virtual reality, and extended reality centres.

“We intend to reinforce our relevance among our partners and to enhance the profile of CUT as a leading university of technology, not only in the region but in Africa,” said CUT acting Vice-Chancellor and Principal, Dr Sally Dzingwa.

“Our current model with technological advancements will move us closer to our vision of 2030, to become a leading university of technology in Africa.”
