Eskom pushing load shedding higher this week – here’s the new schedule

 ·4 Jul 2023

Power utility Eskom says that it will be breaking daytime suspensions of load shedding and pushing outages up to stage 1 during the day.

Stage 3 load shedding will be implemented from 16h00 on Tuesday (4 July) until midnight.

On Wednesday and Thursday, stage 1 load shedding will be implemented from 05h00 until 16h00, followed by Stage 3 load shedding from 16h00 until midnight on both days.

“The implementation of Stage 1 load shedding is due to an increase in generation unit failures,” Eskom said.

Despite the return to daytime load shedding, Eskom said that it expects to suspend outages once again later in the week.

Load shedding will be suspended from midnight on Thursday until 16h00 on Friday, and stage 3 load shedding will be implemented again from 16h00 until midnight.

Eskom said it would publish another update should any significant changes occur.

Tuesday, 4 July

  • Suspended: until 16h00
  • Stage 3: 16h00 to 00h00

Wednesday, 5 July

  • Suspended: 00h00 to 05h00
  • Stage 1: 05h00 to 16h00
  • Stage 3: 16h00 to 00h00

Thursday, 6 July

  • Suspended: 00h00 to 05h00
  • Stage 1: 05h00 to 16h00
  • Stage 3: 16h00 to 00h00

Friday, 7 July

  • Suspended: 00h00 to 16h00
  • Stage 3: 16h00 to 00h00

Breakdowns currently amount to 14,991MW of generating capacity while the generating capacity out of service for planned maintenance is 4,264MW.

Over the past 24 hours, a generating unit each at Grootvlei, Kriel and Matla power stations was returned to service.

In the same period, a generation unit each at Majuba and Tutuka power stations was taken out of service due to breakdowns.

The delay in returning to service a generating unit at Tutuka Power Station is contributing to the current capacity constraints.
