Here is the official petrol price for October

 ·5 Oct 2026

The Department of Mineral and Petroleum Resources has published the official fuel price adjustments that will take effect on Wednesday, 7 October 2026.

September was a bleak month for fuel price recoveries, with escalations in the war in the Middle East pushing oil prices over $100 a barrel and sustaining that level for most of the month.

The rand also weakened against the US dollar amid broader market volatility, reducing its slight over-recovery to zero.

This resulted in a much steeper under-recovery in both petrol and diesel prices, which are now being passed on to consumers at the pumps.

Prices were also impacted by an increase in the slate levy of 4.38 cents per litre.

As a result, petrol and diesel drivers are in for severe pain from Wednesday, with petrol prices increasing by R3.12 and R3.33 per litre and diesel by R2.84 and R3.24 per litre.

Both fuel types have hit new record highs, the second time this year, with petrol breaking the R30 per litre level.

The table below outlines the changes for the month ahead:

FuelChange
Petrol 93increase of R3.12 per litre
Petrol 95increase of R3.33 per litre
Diesel 0.05% (wholesale)increase of R2.84 per litre
Diesel 0.005% (wholesale)increase of R3.24 per litre
Illuminating Paraffin (Wholesale)increase of R3.58 per litre
LPGAS (Gauteng)increase of 42 cents per kg

In terms of the Working Rules to administer the BFP, the differentials between 95 and 93 petrol grades are adjusted at the beginning of each quarter.

The BFP differentials between 95 and 93 petrol grades have changed, and therefore the different price adjustments between the two grades.

The average international product prices for Petrol, Diesel and Illuminating Paraffin increased during the period under review.

The Rand appreciated against the US Dollar on average during the period under review compared with the previous period.

The average Rand/US Dollar exchange rate for the period 28 August 2026 to 01 October 2026 was 16.2123 compared to 16.2139 during the previous period.

This led to a lower contribution to the Basic Fuel Prices on Petrol, Diesel and Illuminating Paraffin by 0.171 c/l, 0.215 c/l, 0.212 c/l respectively.

The combined cumulative Petrol and Diesel Slate balances at the end of August 2026 amounted to a negative balance of R10.456 billion.

In line with the provisions of the Self-Adjusting Slate Levy Mechanism, a Slate Levy of 87.66 c/l will be implemented into the price structures of Petrol and Diesel with effect from 07 October 2026.

The increase in the slate levy will be from 83.28 to 87.66, resulting in an increase of 4.38 c/l in the price structure of Petrol and Diesel.

The changes are effective from Wednesday, 7 October 2026.
