Mining giant, Anglo American, has agreed a $220m global managed networked IT services contract with UK telecoms firm, BT.

The contract covers all Anglo American’s networking requirements at several hundred locations globally, and is valued at approximately $220 million over the next 5 years.

BT will be deploying its BT Connect portfolio of “intelligent” networking solutions to meet Anglo American’s requirements in 15 countries in Africa, Latin America, Asia and Europe, including locations in remote mining areas. These will be provided using a number of technologies, such as Ethernet, MPLS, satellite and microwave access.

The BT Connect Applications service will be deployed at 65 locations around the world.

The contract includes global internet access, with a secure remote access solution for mobile workers also part of the service.

BT will also be deploying its One Voice converged communications platform, pooling all Anglo American voice services onto a single platform to deliver substantial savings, simplify management and enable collaborative services such as IP Telephony (IPT) to be provided.

Anglo American will also make use of BT’s conferencing solutions, including managed phone and web conferencing, video conferencing at 130 sites, as well as six fully managed tele-presence solutions at four major sites.

Under the new contract, BT also becomes Anglo American’s global supplier of choice for network hardware equipment.

Mike Bowden, group CIO and head of shared services at Anglo American, said: “BT has helped us bring together our remote operations so we can truly leverage our global scale and reapply best practice from wherever it is created to wherever it is needed. We look forward to continuing our mutually respectful and beneficial relationship.”

Bas Burger, President global commerce, BT Global Services, said: “We are very proud to be in a position to help leading global companies such as Anglo American enable, secure and manage information flows in the pursuit of business process simplification and operational efficiencies.”

“In the current economy, customers are driving for leaner production processes, optimised supply chain operations, accelerated rate of innovation and improved collaboration with suppliers and customers on a global scale,” he continued.

“Our portfolio of services and our investments in growing economies across Asia Pacific, Latin America, the Middle-East and Africa are designed to support the strategy of global organisations such as Anglo American,” concluded Burger.
