Absa attracts 120,000 mobile customers each month
Absa says it attracts an average of 120,000 new mobile customers each month and boasts in excess of 3.6 million mobile banking clients and 1.35 million online customers.
According to Christo Vrey, head of Absa Digital Banking, the group attracted 180,000 new mobile users in March.
Absa will not provide a date for the launch of its banking application; however, the group’s new multi-million online platform has been optimised for tablet use.
The anticipated release of Absa’s banking app was delayed due to problems with its back-end system. It had initially intended to launch an app in Q4 of 2011.
“I can’t give you a date, but we are working on it, and I can assure you, we won’t disappoint our clients,” Vrey told BusinessTech.
However, he said: “Absa Online has also been optimised for tablet use; and the services layer of the architecture will be the starting point for the redevelopment of the bank’s WAP-based mobile banking service later in 2012.”
The Absa Group is listed on the JSE and boasts 12.1 million customers, offering a complete range of retail, business, corporate and investment banking, insurance, and wealth management products and services.
At 31 December 2011, the group had 718.2 million shares in issue and a market capitalisation of R101.27 billion.
The group had assets of R786.7 billion, 9541 automated teller machines and 35,200 permanent employees.
