The most in-demand job skills in South Africa right now
Jobs portal CareerJunction has published its employment insights report for November 2022, highlighting the job skills that are most in demand in South Africa right now.
The report is based on comprehensive data gathered from Saongroup South Africa – where around 5,000 of the country’s top recruiters advertise their positions to millions of registered jobseekers.
Demand for labour has remained steady, CareerJunction said. However, recruitment activity has eased slightly since October. This downturn in recruitment was driven by lower activity for sales and IT, Business and Management professionals.
Year-on-year, however, recruitment activity has seen a 6% increase since November 2021, the group said.
CareerJunction said that over the past three months, there has been growing hiring activity in the Building and Construction, Architecture and Engineering and Cleaning, Maintenance and Repair sectors, while there has been a drop off in the Sales, Business & Management and IT sectors.
The most significant shifts are as follows:
Building & Construction (+16%)

- Other Architecture and Engineering
Cleaning, Maintenance & Repair (+10%)
- Other Cleaning, Maintenance and Repair
Declining hiring activity was found in the following sectors:
Sales (-8%)
- Representative/ Sales consulting
Business & Management (-4%)
- Middle/ Department Management
- Staff Recruitment/ Selection
- Senior Management
- Business Development
Information Technology (-4%)
- Software Development
- Business Analysis
- IT Project Administration/ Management
Provincial breakdown
Focusing on the Building & Construction sector, CareerJucntion said that it has seen the highest increase in hiring activity for these jobs in Gauteng and the Western Cape over the last three years.
“Gauteng remains the recruitment hub of South Africa, representing over half of the country’s vacancies. Just over 30% of job offers are in the Western Cape and KwaZulu-Natal. International work opportunities remain at 3%,” it said.
Demand for Architecture & Engineering professionals has also been growing over the last three years in KwaZulu-Natal and Gauteng, said CareerJunction.
“The Western Cape saw a dip in recruitment activity for Architecture & Engineering staff in 2021. However, hiring activity in this sector has grown over the last year.”
Professionals in the Manufacturing & Assembly sector have been growing over the last three years in KwaZulu-Natal and Gauteng. According to CareerJunction, the Western Cape experienced increased hiring activity for these types of professionals.
Design, Media and Arts
The latest report from CareerJunction unpacked the Design, Media and Arts space, uncovering where these skills are getting employed the most and how much they can expect to make.
The majority of people in this sector are employed in Gauteng, the jobs portal said.
The most in-demand roles for people with such skills include:
- Head of Design
- UX Design Specialist
- Design Lead
In terms of market-related salaries, applicants for the following positions could expect something such as:
- Graphic Designer – R19,735 to R23,298 per month
- Product Designer – R22,625 to R28,833 per month
- Web Designer – R26,280 to R37,825 per month
