South Africans are flocking to this tiny European island – and it wants more
The Isle of Man is a popular destination for South African expats, with the tiny island looking to increase its population over the next 15 years.
Amidst a challenging economic environment characterised by low growth and high unemployment, many South Africans are looking for work opportunities overseas.
One location that stands out is the Isle of Man, with the small island in the Irish Sea offering a range of benefits for South Africans looking for new horizons.
The Isle of Man has a strong economy that is characterised by low unemployment rates and a high standard of living.
The island has also diversified its economy beyond traditional sectors, such as tourism and agriculture, into finance, technology, and e-gaming.
This diversification has created many job opportunities, especially for skilled professionals in IT, finance, and engineering.
The demand for skilled workers means that qualified South Africans can often find jobs relatively quickly, making the Isle of Man an attractive destination for those looking to advance their careers.
“We have relocated a huge percentage of South Africans to the Isle of Man over recent years and have seen the skill need change during this time,” said Marnie Delaney-James, Director at Isle of Man Opportunities.
“The Isle of Man Government plans to increase the population by another fifteen thousand people by 2037, which means that the demand in various sectors is greater than ever.’
“The Isle of Man has a reputation for offering competitive salaries, particularly in high-demand sectors and features a favourable tax regime, with no capital gains tax and a low rate of income tax, making it financially beneficial for expatriates.”
“With a higher disposable income and an improved quality of life, South Africans settle well in the Isle of Man.’
It’s not only individuals who wish to work on the Isle of Man but also businesses that hope to base themselves on the island.
“There is zero percentage capital gains tax and in some circumstances, funding and grants available too for businesses wishing to relocate to the Isle of Man,” added Delaney-James.
South African hub
The Isle of Man is renowned for its beautiful natural landscapes, rich culture and a strong sense of community.
Low crime rates, excellent healthcare services, and a well-regarded education system improve the quality of life.
The island’s community is also known for being welcoming and friendly, making it easier for immigrants to settle in.
The Isle of Man’s 2021 census data showed that South Africans make up 1.45% of its total population, meaning that there are roughly 1,000 South Africans on the island.
The immigration process is relatively straightforward and the island offers a simple work visa and a number of business visas attracting a small start-up business or a business already established.
“In comparison to other popular locations for South Africans to emigrate to, the Isle of Man has no age cap, no point system, does not require a practising degree and is relatively cost-effective with no huge immigration charges,” said Delaney-James.
“Furthermore, after a period of time, one can apply for a British passport.’
This article has been updated with corrections. The Isle of Man Government said that its South African expat population only makes up 1.45% of its total population, not 12% as previously reported.
