Shoprite has just launched an online liquor store

 ·15 Nov 2021

The Shoprite Group has launched LiquorShop Online – an online liquor store selling more than 3,000 drinks and accessories at supermarket prices.

Among the thousands of everyday products are some high-end spirits not often found in local stores. Some of the unique premium products that are available include:

  • Remy Martin Louis XIII Cognac – R69,999
  • Bunnahabhain 25-year-old Islay Single Malt Scotch Whisky – R5,999
  • A limited-edition 23-year-old Springbank Single Malt Scotch Whisky – R3,799
  • Teeling Single Malt Irish Whiskey – R599

The group said that the online store will also stock a range of sought-after premium wines, while shoppers can add accessories like wine glasses, tumblers, and decanters to their orders.

The Shoprite group said that products will retail at supermarket prices, and customers can link their Xtra Savings cards to benefit from deals online.

Shoppers living in Gauteng or the Western Cape will receive free delivery for orders over R450. A delivery fee of R75 will apply to orders less than this. In other areas, a delivery fee of R150 applies to orders of less than R1,000.

A key market

The launch of the new online store comes after the Shoprite group sees continued success from home deliveries through its Sixty60 service.

Checkers Sixty60 was made available in all nine provinces in South Africa earlier this year. The one-hour on-demand grocery delivery service launched in late 2019, just before the onset of the Covid-19 pandemic in early 2020.

It has been downloaded more than 1.9 million times in less than two years since its launch.

Checkers, inclusive of Checkers Hyper, operates from 268 stores in South Africa, while Checkers Sixty60 has rapidly expanded to over 261 stores and has created over 4,100 new jobs – up from 800 a little over a year ago.
