These are the top employers in South Africa – including new entries

The Shoprite Group of companies has joined the list of over 140 businesses named as top employers in South Africa by the Top Employers Institute.

The group announced on Wednesday (26 June) that it received its certification, which reflects its position as the largest single private-sector employer in South Africa, with over 160,000 employees on its books.

“Certification is awarded solely to companies whose Human Resources (HR) practices meet international best-practice standards,” it said.

“This involves a rigorous evaluation process – including an independently audited and fact-based HR Best Practices Survey that assesses hundreds of practices, processes and policies – to ensure authenticity and quality.”

The top employers for 2024 were first announced in January when Vodacom Group was named as the number one top employer in the country for the first time.

The top 10 overall employers were ranked as follows:

1. Vodacom
2. HCL Technologies
3. Unilever South Africa
4. Mondelez International
5. Daimler Truck SA
6. =Accenture SA
7. =Heineken Beverages
8. Santam
9. Novartis SA
10. Mercedes Benz SA

Since the start of the year, when 137 companies were listed as top employers, five more have been added, including Shoprite, taking the total to 142.

The five new top employers are:

• Shoprite
• GZ Industries
• Genpact
• IQbusiness
• CEF Group
