57-year-old South African retailer hits 1,000 store milestone

 ·28 Nov 2025

Clicks has opened its 1,000th store, with a new location in Omni Square, Bassonia, as the group looks to add 200 more in the medium term.

Since it first opened in Cape Town in 1968, Clicks has now grown to 1,000 stores and over 780 pharmacies across South Africa, Namibia, Botswana, Eswatini, and Lesotho.

Now, more than half of South Africans live within five kilometres of a Click Pharmacy, and the group is aiming to reach 1,200 stores over the medium term.

The new store offers a full-service pharmacy, a Beauty Hall, enhanced Health Elevation service, and a redesigned customer experience focused on convenience, value and accessibility.

“We’re committed to meeting our customers’ needs and making health, beauty, and everyday essentials accessible to everyone,” said Bongiwe Ntuli, Managing Executive of Clicks Retailers SA.

“As a value retailer, we’ve stayed true to our heritage, value is part of our DNA, and our ‘feel good, pay less’ promise has remained unchanged for 57 years.”

Bassonia was chosen for the milestone store as it serves a growing community with a mix of families and young professionals.

Its central location also makes it easy to access the retailer’s total offerings in a single step.

The store is larger than a typical Clicks outlet, featuring wider aisles and an upgraded layout for a smoother and more enjoyable shopping experience.

Customers can also collect chronic medication, fill acute prescriptions, purchase over-the-counter items, and shop for skincare and daily essentials in a single trip.

The retailer stated that the layout enables seamless movement between health, beauty, baby, and convenience items.

The expanded Beauty Hall also offers more space for customers’ favourite brands, while the pharmacy provides knowledgeable staff and access to both preventative and curative health products.

The store also features digital touchpoints, including screens highlighting promotions and a dedicated fragrance counter.

The group added that sustainability is central to the store’s design, with energy-efficient lighting and refrigeration, eco-friendly fittings and biodegradable paper pharmacy bags.

Pharmacy stock is delivered by UPD using electric vehicles to reduce environmental impact, and many beauty and personal care products are cruelty-free or sustainably formulated.

Clicks said that each store creates roughly 20 in-store positions, along with five support roles.

This milestone also coincides with 30 years of ClubCard, which now has 12.8 million active members and is South Africa’s most widely used retail loyalty programme.
