The biggest worry for SA businesses right now

Power failures are the leading concern for small business owners in South Africa, having overtaken crime, the high cost of fuel, and interest rates.

According to World Wide Worx research as reported on by SME South Africa, 14,000 “decision makers” across South African small and medium enterprises saw power failures as the biggest external threat to their business.

“71% of respondents said power failures were a pressing issue, double the number which rated crime as the most important (36%),” said the report.

“The reason we have seen such a massive jump for this category is due to the cumulative effects of ongoing load shedding,” stated World Wide Worx’s Arthur Goldstuck.

Another focus of the survey was cloud services used by SMEs, which revealed that 39% of small businesses are using cloud services

SMEs can and should place measures to mitigate the impact of load shedding – including protecting themselves from the loss of critical data in the event of power loss by backing up, said Goldstuck.
