Limpopo municipality wants 35% electricity tariff hike
The Mookgophong local municipality in Limpopo is applying for a 35% electricity tariff hike, according to a notice published in Friday’s Government Gazette.
It is one of 9 local municipalities around the country applying for increases above the National Energy Regulator of SA’s (Nersa) increase guideline of 12.2%.
Mookgophong justifies the proposal by saying it “needs to maintain its rural network”, according to the notice by Nersa of public hearings to be held on the proposed increases.
The public hearings would be held in Pretoria on June 19.
Next highest is the Gariep local municipality, in the Eastern Cape, which is applying for a 17% hike to “align tariffs to benchmarks”.
The Endumeni local municipality in KwaZulu-Natal wants a 16% hike due to a high losses from illegal connections and electricity theft and to fund infrastructure development.
The other local municipalities are Abaqulusi (15%), Cape Agulhas (14.9%), City of Umhlathuze (14%), Drakenstein (12.6%), Midvaal (14%), and Msukaligwa (13%).
