Online publication Personal Finance held its Raging Bull awards on Wednesday (25 January), announcing the best performing financial managers in South Africa over the course of 2016.

The awards were established in 1997 to honour the managers of funds that consistently earn good returns for South African retail investors.

Allan Gray took home the most prestigious award of “South African Management Company of the Year in 2016”, making it the fifth time in the company’s history.

It also indicated a massive come back for the asset manager as it had slipped down the rankings in recent years – stooping to as low as fifth in 2014.

The management company of the year award is based on the overall risk-adjusted performance of all a company’s funds in unit trust sectors that consist of five or more funds with a performance history of at least five years to the end of 2016.

PSG received the certificate for second-best domestic management company, while Nedgroup Investments scooped both third place as well as the award for best Offshore Management Company in 2016.

Investec Asset Management won two “special” awards over the course of the evening, including a Raging Bull for top outright performance over 21 years by a South African equity general fund, as well as an award for the best risk-adjusted performance over 21 years by a South African multi-asset equity fund.
