The cost of a plane ticket in South Africa vs the world

South Africa has dropped out of the top 10 countries for affordable flights, according to the latest Flight Price Index by Kiwi.com.

The country has dropped to 11th place in the group’s 2017 Aviation Price Index, from seventh position in 2016. The index is based on the assessment of more than one million international and domestic journeys.

The index accounts for short-haul and long-haul flights from 80 of the world’s most frequently visited countries and cities, and calculates an average ticket cost per 100 km of travel, using high and low season flight costs for over a million journeys.

In South Africa, the average cost per 100km of air travel was recorded at $7.25 (R94), down from $7.33 (R95) in 2016. On long-haul flights (international) the average is $7.78 (R101), while short-haul flights (domestic) carry an average of $6.71 (R87).

According to Kiwi.com CEO, Oliver Dlouhy, ticket prices fluctuate constantly for a myriad of reasons, with year-on-year changes partly being attributed to fuel prices, sociopolitical shifts such as Brexit, elections and fluctuations in foreign exchange rates.

“The UK, for example, is seeing a larger number of Americans visit due to the weakening of the pound, whereas Egypt and Turkey saw a drop in ticket prices due to a decrease in demand due to regional turmoil,” Dlouhy said.

India, which was ranked as the cheapest country for air travel in 2016 has slipped down to third, while Malaysia, which was ranked second has now been pushed up to the top.

Belgium (80th), the Netherlands (79th) and Qatar (78th) have been ranked as the three most expensive countries for air fare.

Malaysia’s flights carry an average cost of $4.18 (R54) per 100km, while Belgium has an average cost of $54.63 (R709).
