Business Talk – Glacier International MD Hildegard Wilson on the changing investment landscape
In this Business Talk with Michael Avery interview, Hildegard Wilson discusses how the investment landscape is changing.
Wilson is the Managing Director of Glacier International – an international investment platform that lets you diversify your portfolio across countries and currencies.
She has 19 years of financial services industry experience, including time as a product actuary in investments at Momentum, and as an asset consultant with NMG.
In 2023, she was appointed as the Head of Investment Solutions within the broader Glacier Business Development team, before taking on her current role earlier this year.
Wilson studied at the University of Pretoria and is a qualified actuary.
She has a Bachelor of Science degree in Financial and Actuarial Mathematics, as well as an Honours degree in Actuarial Mathematics.
Wilson is also a fellow of the Actuarial Society of South Africa, and the current chair of its Investment Committee.
The interview
In this Business Talk interview, Wilson explains why South Africans should consider investing a portion of their savings offshore.
She expands on what geographic and currency diversification mean in practical terms for local investors, before highlighting that this approach is not only for the wealthy.
Wilson then discusses Regulation 28, which allows investors to allocate up to 45% offshore within their retirement funds.
She also unpacks the difference between a feeder fund and an offshore investment, and concludes the interview by highlighting additional opportunities of investing offshore – specifically regarding sectors that are underrepresented locally.
