The DA ripped into deputy president Cyril Ramaphosa in a recent session in Parliament, saying that he ‘bottled’ his opportunities to lead the country, twice.
DA’s Chief Whip in Parliament, John Steenhuisen, lambasted Ramaphosa in front of current president, Jacob Zuma, in a parliamentary sitting last week.
Steenhuisen called Ramaphosa a “Gucci Marxist”, wearing a Gucci suit while “cruising around in a 7-Series Sedan”, which he jokingly pointed out was not locally manufactured – referencing a recent speech by the deputy president in which he urged South Africans to ‘buy local’ to boost the economy and create jobs.
The DA’s Chief Whip in Parliament said he felt sorry for Ramaphosa.
“It must be very embarrassing when your previous boss, Ronald McDonald, has more credibility than your current boss. He’s exchanged the golden arches for poorly attended marches,” he said in reference to Rampahosa’s franchise license for McDonald’s in South Africa.
“He thought that becoming president of the ANC and becoming president of the country was going to be as easy as 1-2-3. You forgot the most important A-B-C – and that’s the word that’s going on (among) your back-benchers: ‘Anybody But Cyril’.”
“You’ve had two opportunities to take control of this country and re-steer it where it needs to go, Mr deputy president. You’ve bottled both of them. You are fast becoming yesterday’s man,” Steenhuisen said.
On the ANC, Steenhuisen said that the political party did not have the guts to sack president Zuma, despite his constitutional violations. “That’s why you all look so dejected, like you have lost the election already.”
“You can’t fill a stadium. Hell, you even struggle to fill school halls these days. All you do is lose in court,” he said.
