An advertisement for the position of Chief Operations Officer at the SABC clearly states that a relevant degree or diploma is a requirement for the position.
The SABC COO advertisement, published in the Sunday Times on 3 February 2013, states that the first requirement is “A relevant degree/diploma and/or equivalent qualification”.
Current SABC COO Hlaudi Motsoeneng does not have a degree, diploma, or a matric certificate. Motsoeneng is also accused of lying about having a matric certificate.
Motsoeneng’s permanent appointment as COO by communications Minister Faith Muthambi in July 2014 came as a shock to many people.
This appointment was also a slap in the face for Public Protector Thuli Madonsela who found that Motsoeneng was not fit for the job.
Madonsela’s report found that Motsoeneng had purged senior staff and misrepresented his qualifications to the SABC.
There is currently a legal battle surrounding Motsoeneng’s appointment following the DA’s application to have the appointment set aside.
The SABC and Department of Communications are defending the decision to appoint Motsoeneng, while the DA is seeking for an urgent interim interdict suspending Motsoeneng.
MyBroadband asked the SABC for feedback regarding Motsoeneng’s appointment and his qualification, but the broadcaster did not respond by the time of publication.
The Department of Communications was also asked for comment about the issue, but, again, no feedback was received.
