South Africa’s top hotels for the super-rich

A new report compiled by New World Wealth shows which South African hotels are the most-visited by the super wealthy.

The group’s research looked at hotels and resorts across the entire African continent, but found that South Africa is the most popular destination for the super-rich, with over 12,000 multi-millionaires visiting the country during the past year.

Major destinations for the ultra wealthy (worth over $30 million) within South Africa include: Cape Town, Johannesburg, Umhlanga, Franschoek, Stellenbosch, Kruger Park – mainly around Sabi Sands – and the Garden route (Knysna).

Looking at the 10 most visited hotels in the country, half can be found in the greater Cape Town area; however, Sun City remains the country’s most popular destination for the super rich.

Major destinations outside South Africa include: Marrakesh in Morocco, Casablanca in Morocco, Cairo in Egypt, Nairobi in Kenya, the Serengeti in Tanzania, Sharm El Sheikh in Egypt, the Masai Mara in Kenya, Livingstone in Zambia and the Okavango Swamps in Botswana.

Gorilla safaris in the Virunga Mountains (in and around Uganda) are also popular, New World Wealth said.

In a separate survey done by New World Wealth in June 2014, the group asked a panel of selected multi-millionaires which the best hotels and lodges in Africa were, based on their travel experience.

La Mamounia hotel in Morocco was voted as the best hotel in Africa by the panel, with 12 Apostles in Cape Town the top-rated South African location (rated 4th, overall).
