Eskom Stage 2 load shedding hits on Thursday

 ·26 Mar 2015

Eskom has announced that it will implement Stage 2 load shedding for a second consecutive day on Thursday (26 March).

“Eskom will implement ‪‎load shedding‬ stage 2 from 12h00 to 22h00 tonight. We apologise to South Africa for the inconvenience,” the company said in a brief statement.

Earlier in the week, Eskom put out a bulletin with the supply and demand forecast up to Sunday (28 March), showing that demand was expected exceed supply for most of the week.

The power utility has struggled with supply for the bulk of 2015 so far following the collapse of one of its coal storage silos, and amid diesel shortages, and maintenance woes.

Because of these constraints, Eskom says it has been forced to explore options for further review of tariff increases for the 2015/16 financial year.

As it is, Eskom confirmed earlier this month that the price of electricity will rise by 12.69%, from 1 April 2015.

Power cuts implemented by Eskom costs South Africa’s economy between $1.7 billion (R20 billion) and $6.8 billion (R80.1 billion) a month, Reuters reported on Wednesday (25 March).
