An internal ANC report shows that the party has lost significant support in Gauteng – with support for the party in Johannesburg sinking to only 37%, the Sunday Times reported.
The paper said the survey came from the ANC’s internal research department and painted a worrying picture for the ANC leadership, which expected the results to show support above 50%.
According to the findings, all major metros – Johannesburg, Ekurhuleni and Tshwane -showed support below 50%, with the West Rand being the only region in the province that was above that level.
Johannesburg was at 37% support for the ANC, while the other areas were between 30% and 40%, a party leader told the paper.
The results reportedly came as a shock to ANC leaders, who expected those results only for Tshwane where the EFF had been making inroads.
The official line from ANC leadership in Gauteng is that they are not aware of the predictions, saying only that the party will only know where it stands after the 2016 municipal elections.
The municipal elections will be held on 3 August 2016.
