Zuma to face ANC integrity commission

 ·25 Nov 2016

President Jacob Zuma will have a meeting with the ANC’s integrity commission, secretary general Gwede Mantashe has confirmed.

Speaking to Reuters ahead of Friday’s ANC NEC meeting, Mantashe confirmed that the meeting would take place, but would not divulge what would be discussed.

It is understood that the IC meeting will take place on 3 December 2016.

Zuma has been chased by persistent allegations of corruption, and has jumped from one scandal to the next before and during his presidency.

The ANC is also recovering from very poor election results in August.

Many sectors of society, including members of the ANC itself, have repeatedly called for him to step down, and blame him for divisions in the party, and the ANC’s waning support in every election since 2009.

The ANC integrity commission was formed in 2013 to protect the image of the party in events where members have been accused of criminal or improper conduct.

Zuma has already been found guilty of having acted against the constitution in the Nkandla saga earlier in the year, and has most recently been implicated in state capture, involving the Gupta family.

The president also has the matter of 783 fraud and corruption charges against him waiting in the wings.

Divisions in the ANC are becoming clearer as various factions in party are drawing lines of support.

Worker federation Cosatu has announced its endorsement for deputy president Cyril Ramaphosa as the next president of the party. Zuma’s preferred candidate is said to be his ex-wife, and current AU chair, Nkosazana Dlamini-Zuma.
