Here are the latest return dates for all school grades in South Africa – with some only back at the end of August

The Department of Basic Education (DBE) has published a new directive which outlines the new return dates for South African schools.

The directive, which was gazetted on Tuesday (7 July), further splits the return of pupils with some students now set to return as late at 31 August.

These new dates are detailed in the table below.

Grades Return to school date
  • Grade 7;
  • Grade 12; and
  • Schools of Skill: Year 4.
1 June 2020
  • Grade R;
  • Grade 6; and
  • Grade 11
6 July 2020
  • Grade 3
  • Grade 10;
  • Schools of Skill: Year 3;
  • Schools for Learners with Severe Intellectual Disabilities (“SID”): Grade R, Grade 3 and final year (Occupational);
  • Schools with Learners with Severe and Profound Intellectual Disabilities (“LSPID”): Year 3;
  • Schools with autistic learners: final year (18 years and above).

  • Grades 1 and 2;
  • School of Skill: Year 2;
  • Schools for Learners with Severe Intellectual Disabilities (“SID”): Grades 1 and 2;
  • Schools with Learners with Severe and Profound Intellectual Disabilities (“LSPID”): Years 1 and 2;
  • Schools with autistic learners: Junior group (below 13 years).
27 July 2020
  • Grade 4;
  • Grade 9;
  • Year 1 in Schools of Skill; and
  • Schools with autistic learners: Senior Group (13 years and above)
17 August 2020
  • Grade 5;
  • Grade 8; and
  • Schools for Learners with Severe Intellectual Disabilities (“SID”): Grades 4 and 5
31 August 2020

The directive also makes provision for provinces which are unable to comply with the new start dates.

In these cases, the DBE said that if a MEC responsible for education in a province must, at least seven days before the date identified for the return of the respective grades, submit a report to the Minister for concurrence or further determination.

The report must include:

  • The reasons for the non-compliance; and
  • A plan with the proposed dates for the phased return of learners and officials in the respective grades.
