How VoIP from MTN can transform South Africa’s labour sector

 ·26 Oct 2023

The South African government is focused on improving the local labour sector, as this is the best way to foster economic growth.

Through intelligent regulations and engagements that prioritise the rights and interests of both workers and employers, the state believes it can contribute to a sustainable, healthy local economic landscape.

MTN is proud to be an RT15 partner of the South African government and has proposed its Voice over Internet Protocol (VoIP) solution to support the government’s endeavoursin the labour sector.

At the GovTech 2023 conference, MTN held valuable conversations with key stakeholders about how its VoIP solution can assist the government’s employees who are working to improve South Africa’s job market.

Cost savings

VoIP calls are generally more affordable than using a traditional phone line, which saves money when state labour employees make calls to workers, employers, and other role-players.

Furthermore, VoIP systems are far less expensive to maintain and upgrade – resulting in lower infrastructure costs for the government over the long term.

All costs are also billed transparently and in detail to give the state more insight into its expenses.

Improved communication

Thanks to VoIP solutions running over the internet, calls are clearer and more reliable than when using traditional phone lines.

They also support video conferencing, an in-demand channel for facilitating virtual labour meetings, wage negotiations, and training sessions.

Additionally, both voice and video calls through a VoIP system can be accessed remotely – supporting hybrid workers.

There is even the opportunity to use smartphone apps to take part in a VoIP call, allowing state employees to keep in touch while on the go.

Scalability, security, and integrations

VoIP systems are inherently designed to be easily scaled up or down, and to be highly secure.

MTN therefore prioritizes both scalability and security when building and delivering its VoIP solutions.

This is complemented by the fact that VoIP can be integrated into other state communication and collaboration tools – minimising equipment upgrade costs.

This makes VoIP a reliable, long-term solution for the state’s labour efforts.

Accessibility and environmental impact

With features like voicemail transcription and speech recognition, VoIP systems are also the best way to support state employees and labour stakeholders with disabilities.

This is an important part of being a responsible government, which MTN fully supports, and MTN emphasised this benefit of using VoIP systems in its discussions with the state at GovTech 2023.

Lowering the state’s environmental impact is another benefit of VoIP technology, as it consumes less energy than traditional phone systems.

Other features

Beyond being a huge upgrade on traditional phone systems, VoIP technology delivers completely new features to the state and its labour efforts, including:

  • Voicemail-to-Email – VoIP systems can send voicemail messages to an email address for easy accessibility.
  • Call routing – Customisable call routing and forwarding ensures calls reach the right labour employees.
  • Call recording – VoIP solutions can offer call recording functionality for compliance and documentation.

MTN looks forward to working with the state to improve its labour processes using VoIP technology and is passionate about how this will contribute to South Africa’s economy.

It is positive about playing a major role in the government’s labour plans following its discussions at GovTech 2023.
