Mind the Speed is so confident in the quality of its Internet services, that it has implemented two dedicated tools aimed at the discerning customer – for whom latencies and performance are paramount – to show you how it beats your current ISP.

We unpack the Mind the Speed Looking Glass and Mind the Speed Compare tools, below.

Mind the Speed Looking Glass

Mind the Speed Looking Glass is a great way to check the ISP’s latency to various locations in real-time.

You can test the performance of Mind the Speed by visiting the Looking Glass platform and entering the following information:

  • Router to use – You can choose to test from your preferred location which will provide results from the Mind the Speed datacentres in Cape Town, Johannesburg, or Durban.
  • Command to issue – Choose between the following commands:
    • Ping an IP address or hostname
    • Traceroute an IP address or hostname

As a test, we set a router in Johannesburg to ping an IP address in London using Mind the Speed.

The five ping tests were all measured at under 159ms – an outstanding result for even the most demanding Internet user.

We conducted the same test from Cape Town to the same IP in London and received a result of 139ms – which is impressive, as average latencies to London are about 150ms and above from most providers.

Mind the Speed Compare

Mind the Speed Compare lets you to compare Mind the Speed’s real-time network latency to your own Internet provider.

This online tool has multiple pre-populated content provider endpoints across the globe – including popular gaming servers.

It then calculates latency to these servers from Mind the Speed’s three main local data centres in Cape Town, Durban, and Johannesburg in real time.

Once this is complete, it gives you instructions on how to test your current ISP’s latency to these same endpoints.

As a test, we compared the latencies to the AWS North Virginia region – comparing Mind the Speed against a popular ISP.

Mind the Speed achieved 233ms from Johannesburg. The average latency from the competing ISP was a vastly inferior 341ms.

This result shows why Mind the Speed is so willing to provide its performance metrics to prospective clients – it knows that its Internet services are faster and offer lower latency.
