The Singleton – A single malt for discerning South African whisky lovers
The Singleton is a world-class single malt scotch whisky made in the Dufftown Distillery in Speyside, Scotland.
It is available on Takealot in 12-year-old and 15-year-old vintages, both of which deliver a delicious aroma and taste.
We discuss what makes The Singleton a standout for South African whisky lovers, below.
The Singleton 12 Year Old Single Malt Scotch Whisky
The Singleton 12 Year Old stands out for its unmistakable taste, which comes from its unique selection of European and American Oak casks.
It has a rich amber appearance with polished mahogany highlights, and is a medium to full-bodied scotch whisky that is approachable and rich to the nose.
The first aroma you will experience is one of polished wood and toasted hazelnut, after which you will smell stewed fruits, dried fruits, and a soft brown sugar.
When water is added, you will encounter a sweeter and more direct Speyside character – and after a while, you will enjoy the warm and dry aromas of pencil shavings or match sticks.
Upon tasting, this 12-year-old whisky fills your palate with an initial sweetness combined with a crunchy nut flavour.
Thereafter, you will taste a smooth, fruity Speyside richness that is firm with a balancing sweetness – accompanied by hints of brown sugar and espresso coffee.
When mixed with water, you will taste a pleasant texture of light sweetness, followed by a chewiness that is balanced by light acidity.
The Singleton 15 Year Old Single Malt Scotch Whisky
The Singleton 15 Year Old is the product of a love and passion for making perfectly balanced whisky.
It has a deep amber or burnt orange appearance, with a medium-bodied and pleasantly mouth-coating body.
Expect a slightly spicy nose aroma with hints of toffee apple, honeycomb, linseed oil, and scented tea.
Over time, the aroma becomes fruitier, with a red berry sharpness combined with malt and cereal notes and a golden syrup sweetness.
Adding water brings up a waxier note initially, with traces of sweet chestnut and glace angelica – followed by a whiff of smoke or charred wood.
The flavour is then sweet on the palate to start, with a drying in the finish.
It is a warming, light, and smooth scotch whisky with malty and oaty base notes, and a hint of fresh fruit salad.
Adding water gives a pleasant mouthfeel with some sweetness – although the overall effect remains balanced and dry.
The finish has flavours of pears, digestive biscuits, and delicately spiced notes of aniseed.
