Dispose responsibly – ROSE Foundation and AutoZone lead the way in used oil recycling
ROSE (Recycling Oil Saves the Environment) Foundation has been South Africa’s driving force in the responsible collection and recycling of used lubricating oil for over three decades.
It is partnered with AutoZone in a nationwide effort to make it easier than ever for motorists, workshops, and businesses to dispose of their used oil safely and sustainably.
As part of its support, AutoZone has identified 26 stores across South Africa that now serve as designated drop-off points for used oil.
This provides anyone – including the general public, like DIY enthusiasts and informal mechanics – who purchases their lubricants from AutoZone with an outlet for disposing of used oil safely.
The oil is then collected and processed in line with ROSE Foundation’s strict environmental standards.
How it started
In 1994, the South African government withdrew its support for the used oil refining industry, setting the stage for the launch of ROSE Foundation.
Since then, ROSE Foundation has built a nationwide framework for the safe collection, storage, and recycling of used lubricating oil to ensure it is safely reprocessed under strict environmental standards, rather than being dumped or burned.
This is because lubricants like used motor oil are an extremely dangerous pollutant, with just one litre contaminating millions of litres of drinking water – a harsh reality in a country like South Africa, where water scarcity is an everyday concern.
Since its inception in 1994, ROSE Foundation and its partners – including South Africa’s major lubricant companies – have invested over R100 million into this venture.
This funding goes into building used oil storage depots, manufacturing mini-tanks, and promoting environmental awareness – all to ensure that millions of litres of used oil are kept out of the environment.
Ultimately, this contributes to cleaner communities and a more sustainable future for South Africans.
