The Origin way: inside Gary Shayne’s plan to build South Africa’s next diversified giant
Six acquisitions in three years across three sectors.
Gary Shayne’s Origin Enterprises has become one of the most active acquirers in the South African mid-market, building a diversified operating group at a pace few can match, structured across three pillars: Consumer, Industrial and Property.
The pace is no accident. The team behind Origin has spent more than fifteen years acquiring and building businesses, completing over eighty acquisitions and taking four separate companies past the billion-rand mark.
Origin is the culmination of that experience: a single, permanent group built to compound capital over the long term, with an imminent JSE listing setting up the next stage of growth.
“Origin lives by a few strict rules, one of which is to grow earnings and value sustainably,” Shayne said.
“We are growth-oriented, but growth has to be durable and disciplined, compounded at a high rate of return over a long time.”
“Every acquisition strengthens the platform, and a stronger platform makes the next acquisition better.”
Businesses built to last
Origin’s model is straightforward.
It acquires established businesses with a durable competitive moat and a genuine record of profitability.
Then, it puts unified strategy, direction and capital behind them while management keeps running the company they built.
The companies operating under Origin show what that looks like in practice.
- Union Tiles, one of the oldest tile distributors and retailers in the country, joined the Consumer pillar with over a century of profits behind it and the founding family still in executive roles.
- Taigan M-Stretch manufactures and distributes multi-layered stretch film to FMCG operators across Southern Africa, a capital-light business with exclusive continental distribution rights and blue-chip customers.
- Winmar has supplied safety and protective equipment into mining, construction and agriculture from its Mpumalanga base for 33 years.
- CSP Fabrication & Engineering fabricates certified pipework and pressure assemblies for the water, mining and power sectors.
- ProPaint Manufacturing has produced coatings profitably for more than three decades and complements Africote, Union Tiles’ own coatings and plaster arm, giving Origin real depth in the category.
- Phoenix Properties holds the group’s industrial and commercial property across four provinces, the majority housing Origin’s own operations.
Six operations, each with its own demand drivers.
A home or mall being renovated, a pallet leaving a warehouse, a mine ordering protective gear, a municipality replacing water pipe: when one market slows, another is running.
No single customer, sector or cycle carries the group, and every business in it was profitable long before Origin arrived.
“I have been building businesses for most of my adult life, and I have had my fair share of victories and defeats,” Shayne said.
“Origin is built with that experience in mind. We set ambitious growth targets and we fulfil them, but we are vigilant: we keep debt conservative and we only do a deal if it is accretive.”
Only getting started
The group’s stated objective is to create and sustain shareholder value over years and decades, and its ambition is not modest: Origin intends to take its place among South Africa’s great diversified groups.
Growth will come as much from deepening the existing pillars as from adding new ones.
“Think of Origin as a forest, where each pillar is a tree,” Shayne said.
“The trunk is the anchor operation: established and deeply rooted in its market. The branches are the operations we add around it, businesses that share customers, capability or distribution, and bring their own opportunities.”
“Some acquisitions thicken the trunk, some extend the branches. Today Origin has three trees, Consumer, Industrial and Property, and when the right opportunity presents itself, we will plant a fourth,” he said.
“We look at acquisitions constantly, but we only plant what we know will grow. A forest regenerates itself, shades its own soil and grows stronger every season. That is what we are building at Origin.”
The platform is built, the team is proven, and by Shayne’s own account, Origin is only getting started.
