Naspers launches streaming service in South Africa

Naspers and Tencent have launched their Joox streaming service in South Africa, offering a catalogue with over three million songs.

Joox offers free and paid tiers – with its “VIP” service priced at R29.99 per week, or R59.99 per month – available on iOS and Android devices.

It competes against the likes of Simfy and Deezer, as well as Apple and Google – which also offer music services in South Africa.

The Apple Music and Google Play streaming services are also priced at R59.99 per month – with Apple offering a family tier for up to six people for R89.99 per month, and a university student tier for R29.99 per month.

Joox is currently running a special where the first month’s subscription includes an additional five months of free access.

It has also been included in Vodacom’s Meg Your Day promotion, which offers 1GB of free data for Joox on Fridays – provided you have at least a 100MB data bundle active on your prepaid, contract, or hybrid plan.

Much like its competitors, Joox VIP includes offline listening, which lets you download tracks to your device for listening. It also removes the audio ads that play in its free tier.

Joox offers single sign-on logins for WeChat and Facebook, as well as the ability to register an account with an email address.

Once you have signed in, you are presented with the Discover screen, where Joox highlights its charts and other curated lists of tracks and albums.

It also has a Radio screen, from where you can select playlists of music to listen to, and a “My Music” tab that shows the songs on your device, your list of favourites and recently-played tracks, and your playlists.
