Google’s new website initiative targeted at small and medium businesses (SME), launched on Thursday, has sparked immediate results the group said on Monday.

In an interview with local radio station, 94.7 Highveld Stereo, Google South Africa country manager Luke Mckend said that Woza Online had garnered more than 1,000 new websites.

Woza Online is an initiative by Google, partnering with Vodacom, the Department of Trade & Industry, and the Human Resources Development Council.

The initiative aims to bring tens of thousands of SMEs online in South Africa.

Using the platform, businesses will be able to create their own websites and develop an online presence at no charge.

The programme was launched in Kenya and Nigeria last year, with these countries seeing over 20,000 businesses going online within the first two months.
