Telkom in DStv BoxOffice partnership
Telkom has on Thursday announced a collaboration with DStv, through it’s in-home entertainment movie rental service BoxOffice.
Telkom has launched a 2-4-1 Movie Mondays promotion which gives DStv BoxOffice subscribers the opportunity to rent two BoxOffice movies for the price of one, every Monday during the month of October 2014.
It is not yet clear just how deep this partnership will run, but Telkom hinted in June already that it was working on a deal with media and internet firm, Naspers, to offer DStv content.
All BoxOffice users who take advantage of the promotion before the end of October will be automatically entered into a lucky draw to win a Telkom Supreme SmartHome package.
The package includes includes a Samsung Smart TV and a 24 month broadband contract valued at over R47,000, DStv said.
The promotion is only available to DStv subscribers with PVR access, DStv said.
DStv recently expanded its PVR-based BoxOffice service to include Compact subscribers.
When a subscribers rents one BoxOffice movie from their PVR decoder or Explora they will receive credit for the second movie.
Each rental on Mondays will qualify as a single entry into the lucky draw for the Telkom SmartHome Supreme package.
Telkom has plans to launch fibre-to-the-home (FTTH) in a number of suburbs before the end of the year at speeds of up to 100Mbps.
Chief marketing officer at Telkom, Enzo Scarcella, said in June: “When you have got that capacity, the obvious question is what are you going to put in there?”
The group, he said, was looking at packaging those assets in a converged offering for consumers. He said one only needed to go to the BT and Verizon website to see where the opposition has gone.
“The strategic answers are obvious,” he said.
He said that, while FTTH was still small, the group is working on how to scale to reach the 4.8 million households that Multichoice’s DStv has. “I think that’s the opportunity,” he said.
