MWEB does it again with uncapped ADSL price-cuts
MWEB has slashed the price of its 1Mbps uncapped ADSL service from R299 per month to R199 per month, and is offering all of its 384kbps uncapped subscribers a free upgrade to 1Mbps accounts.
MWEB Business is also reducing the price of its business uncapped 1Mbps service from R986 per month to R799 per month.
The company has also reduced the price of its 384kbps uncapped offering from R219 to R199 per month.
This price-cut creates the curious situation where MWEB’s 384kbps product is priced the same as the ISPs 1Mbps service. However, this is a planned initiative to boost entry-level broadband speeds to 1Mbps.
MWEB ISP CEO, Derek Hershaw said that it is in-line with their aim to make 1Mbps Uncapped ADSL the new entry-level uncapped product in South Africa.
“We would like to see 1Mbps uncapped packages become the new entry-level product for local Internet users,” said Hershaw.
“To champion this change, MWEB has dropped the price of 1Mbps uncapped ADSL by R100. In the interests of growing fixed-line broadband in SA, we look forward to a formal announcement from Telkom to say they’re upgrading all 384Kbps lines to 1Mbps at no extra cost to the end-user,” he continued.
This price reduction places pressure on MWEB’s rivals to follow suit. Afrihost currently charges R297 for their 1Mbps uncapped ADSL service, while Web Africa’s price is R289.
This move by MWEB may well result in affordable uncapped 1Mbps ADSL services becoming the standard entry-level broadband access speed in South Africa.
