Exchange-listed multibillion-rand technology group, Allied Technologies (Altech), has appointed Laurence Savage to the position of chief operating officer (COO), effective January 2013.

CEO of Altech Craig Venter announced in January that former COO, Jeffrey Hedberg, had resigned from Altech to pursue his career outside of the Altech Group. Hedberg had joined Altech following a short stint as acting CEO of Telkom.

In July, the under pressure group also appointed Robin Marsden as executive of corporate finance and Richard Wingfield as chief information officer to the Altech Group.

Savage’s experience spans various industries, including the media, electronics, engineering and automotive sectors.

Craig Venter, the chief executive officer of Altech, said he is pleased to welcome Savage to the Altech Group.

“Mr Savage´s experience globally, his knowledge of the African continent, as well as his educational background and leadership ability, make him a perfect fit for the role of COO given the group´s offering and its future plans,” he said.

“We are convinced that Mr Savage will offer insights that will further bolster the Altech management team as we move the group towards sustainable growth,” added Venter.

Among his many senior management roles, Savage has previously been managing director at both Genrec  Engineering and Hall Longmore, structural steel fabricators and pipe manufacturing companies respectively. Both firms form as part of the Murray and Roberts Group.

He also held the position of chief executive at Avis Fleet Services, where he was responsible for the entire Southern Africa cluster.

He holds both engineering and business qualifications, with an MBA from Milpark Business School. He has also completed an advanced executive programme at Northwest University in Chicago, USA.

According to Altech, Savage also brings to the group an impeccable deal-making and turnaround track record, that he will utilise in maximising shareholder value in Altech´s existing and future ventures.

“We need a strong and talented team to tackle the challenges ahead of us and we believe that in Laurence, we have found a competent, energetic and driven leader, who has what it takes to inspire our resources as we consolidate and grow our position in the market,” Venter said.
