Major 44-hour water outage hitting Joburg next week – all areas affected
Johannesburg Water says that the postponed 44-hour water outage will now be hitting next week, and a large number of areas in the city will be affected.
The shutdown was previously meant to start on 20 June; however, Johannesburg Water said that it requested a postponement in order to provide relief to areas that had been experiencing water supply challenges in the preceding weeks.
The planned shutdown will now occur from 19h00 on Tuesday, 11 July 2023 to 15h00 on Thursday, 13 July 2023.
The planned shutdown is designed to complete a tie-in between the A19 and B14 with a new pipeline, install isolation valves, and upgrade Rand Water’s Eikenhof pump station.
The following reservoirs will be affected:
• Meredale 1 & 2
• Waterval 1 & 2
• Weltevreden
• Roodepoort
• Foresthill 1, 2 & 3
Johannesburg Water’s Yeoville reservoir will also be affected.
As part of the Rand Water shutdown, Johannesburg Water infrastructure supplied by the Eikenhof pump station will receive no water.
Areas that are supplied directly by Rand Water will also be affected by the shutdown.
Johannesburg Water said that the full recovery of the system may take five days or longer after supply has been restored.
However, strategic locations, such as hospitals, clinics, schools, municipal offices, police stations and shopping centres, will receive alternative water supply.
