South Africa’s cheapest food store taking on Checkers and Pick n Pay in Pretoria
Best Before, which offers lower prices than Checkers, Pick n Pay, and Spar because of its business model, is expanding its presence to Pretoria.
The retailer, founded by Mark Gordon and Alain Soriano in 2017, offers much lower prices than other South African retailers.
The group can offer lower prices to customers by selling short and past-dated food and personal care products.
Although these products are past their best-before date, they are safe to use as they remain within their use-by date.
The products come from trusted and reputable suppliers, and stringent quality control ensures that they are safe to use.
The company explained that the best-before date on most items estimates how long a product will remain at optimal quality.
The retailer buys large quantities of products around their best-before date, which it gets at great discounts. These discounts are then passed on to consumers.
These discount stores are very popular in Europe and Australia, which prompted Gordon and Soriano to replicate the business model in South Africa.
They opened their first Best Before store in Wendywood, Sandton, which showed a strong demand for their offering.
They have since opened many new stores and partnered with South Africa’s largest food suppliers to deliver quality food at great prices.
Best Before currently has six stores in Johannesburg, the locations of which are listed below.
- Boksburg – East Rand Mall, Bentel Avenue, Jansen Park, Boksburg.
- Sandton – Woodmead Shopping Centre, 147 Western Service Rd, Woodmead.
- Edenvale – Edenglen Retail Centre, Cnr Harris And Lopis Place, Edenglen
- Fourways – Waterford Centre on Witkoppen Road.
- Northcliff – Blackheath Galleries, 231 Beyers Naude Drive.
- Krugersdorp – Rangeview Centre, Robert Broom Drive, Rangeview.
For the first time, Best Before is expanding outside of its traditional stomping ground by opening a store in Pretoria.
The company announced that it was making rapid progress and nearing completion of its new store in Atterbury Lifestyle Centre.
Atterbury Lifestyle Centre, previously known as Atterbury Decor, is nestled in Faerie Glen, east of Pretoria.
The shopping centre is described as a niche convenience centre mainly servicing residents of Faerie Glen and Garsfontein in Pretoria.
It hosts prominent retailers such as Westpack, Hot Spot Cycles, Good Knight Bedding, K Carrim Builders.
Best Before has taken over the space of Petzone, which, along with its parent company, Westpack Lifestyle, has fallen on hard times.
The Best Before management said the new Pretoria store will be one of the largest in the group’s portfolio.
The retailer has announced that Best Before Pretoria in the Atterbury Lifestyle Centre will open on 25 October 2024.
