Residents of top private security estate in South Africa get their own shopping centre

 ·3 Oct 2026

Shopping on Eastway has officially opened in Midstream, a luxury security estate in Gauteng, with several high-end offerings for residents.

The centre officially opened its doors on 1 October 2026 and was developed by Bondev, the same company behind the Midstream estate.

The new retail centre is anchored by both a Woolworths Food Market and a high-end Checkers for everyday shopping.

The Checkers has numerous high-end additions to cater for the wealthy clientele who live in the Midstream Estate.

These include a sushi bar, a wine section, a dedicated wellness section, and other high-end amenities associated with luxury Checkers stores.

The Woolworths Food Market and the connected Woolworths Cellar also cater to the surrounding estate’s luxury status.

South Africans often believe that Woolworths is the dominant force in the country’s high-end retail space, and Shopping on Eastway will see the two go head-to-head.

Despite Woolworths’ assumed dominance in the area, Checkers is confident it can perform well in the new centre.

Speaking to Newsday, one person from the retailer said they are not concerned about the competition, as they have consistently won this battle.

He also highlighted features such as Checkers Sixty60 and new self-checkout trolleys, which the store is bringing in to appeal to the affluent Midstream market.

Checkers’ parent company, Shoprite, has recently been the dominant force in South Africa’s retail landscape, with additions such as Checkers Sixty60 helping it pull away from the competition.

The grocery delivery service has become a common sight on South Africa’s roads since the offering initially boomed during COVID-19.

For Woolworths, the Eastway centre store will also feature a Woolworths Cafe to serve the Midstream area, offering a coffee shop experience attached to the retailer.

More than grocery stores

Outside of its major anchor retailers, Shopping at Eastway has several smaller stores, services, and restaurants.

It features a Tyre Worx as a standalone store, with the rest of the centre forming a horseshoe around its central parking lot.

For the home store market, the retail centre has a Fine Linen, Pool Warehouse, and Plumblink, with Waxit, Conditioned Hairdressing, and Polished the Experience rounding out the beauty sector.

It has three clothing stores, namely a Freedom of Movement (FOM), Pick n Pay Clothing, and Uniq by Checkers.

The restaurants offered include a Doppio Zero, Calisto’s, and Bossa Goodtimes, with smaller food stores such as Kauai, Paul’s Homemade Ice Cream, Starbucks Coffee, and Woolworths Café also present.

The major restaurants are placed around a communal children’s play area, which has water features, a climbing wall, and a trampoline.

The play area is placed in the middle of the centre’s restaurants, allowing parents to watch over their children and showing the centre’s emphasis on a family experience.

In addition to traditional outlets, the new centre offers extensive medical, health, and wellness services.

“Eastway was created to establish a modern, multidisciplinary healthcare destination where medical and healthcare professionals deliver patient-centred care,” the centre said.

Shopping at Eastway is the latest addition to the luxury Midstream Estate, which has grown since its establishment in 2003.

The estate is located between Johannesburg and Pretoria, with easy access to both cities and the OR Tambo International Airport.

Midstream features several estates within its boundaries, along with high-performing primary schools and a high school.

Midstream College, a private high school within the estate, is often acclaimed for its impressive academic results.
