Platco Digital confirmed in a press statement issued today (22 July 2013) that it will be launching OpenView HD, a low-cost direct-to-home satellite TV service, in October 2013.

This follows a report earlier today based on information from industry sources that OpenView HD will offer 15 channels in a mix of SD and HD, without need of a monthly subscription.

Early indications from Ellies are that a decoder and installation will have an estimated once-off cost of R1,899.

In its statement, Platco said that it will provide carriage to licensed free TV broadcasters in South Africa and the rest of Africa.

The company’s head office is in Johannesburg and its uplink facilities in Cape Town, Platco said.

“Platco aims to acquire as many channels as possible to ensure sustainability and will offer both Standard and High Definition resolutions,” the satellite TV operator said.

According to Platco, its satellite TV platform will have access to “a wide variety of exciting channels” and can be viewed on all TV sets.

Further details on OpenView HD will be communicated on the day of the launch, Platco said.
