Disney+ for R49 in South Africa

 ·9 Sep 2026

Disney has announced that it will launch a new Disney+ app in South Africa on 9 September 2026 to replace its existing app, with a new subscription available for R49 per month.

MyBroadband reported on the changes coming to the streaming giant, including several new features in its updated subscription model.

It said the new app will add several features to its existing offerings, including the ability to use its subscription while travelling abroad.

The app will also add better personalised content recommendations and an updated kids mode with additional parental controls.

The previous Disney+ mobile package has changed to a basic package, which is priced at R49 without any promotional offers.

While the mobile package was limited to small screens such as cellphones and tablets, the new basic package will be available on TVs and laptops.

The basic package will, however, have a streaming resolution limit of 720p – similar to a basic Netflix account, which costs R99 per month.

While the new app will add several features, a basic Disney+ subscription will not allow users to download movies and series for offline viewing.

A new Disney+ premium subscription will cost R179 and include all the features of a basic account, plus several additional features.

This includes the ability to stream movies and series in 4K resolution and to stream concurrently on four separate devices.

Another big change coming for Disney+ users is that the new app will not require a person’s cellphone number to log in.

“After your first login to the new Disney+ app, you can remove your mobile number from your MyDisney account at any time,” the company said.

For existing users, the company said there will be no additional cost as previous plans will be migrated to the streaming service’s new offerings.

“If you have a Disney+ Mobile subscription, your current plan will be discontinued, and you’ll have access to the Disney+ Basic plan on the new Disney+ app at no additional cost,” Disney said.

“If you already have a Disney+ Premium subscription, you’ll continue to enjoy the Premium plan features on the new Disney+ app.”

“Your billing period will remain the same on the new Disney+ app, regardless of your plan.”
