Vodacom adds Netflix to its streaming service

 ·15 Nov 2016

Netflix will be added to the Vodacom On Demand streaming service “early next year,” said Vodacom CEO Shameel Joosub.

Joosub confirmed the addition in a recent TechCentral podcast.

Vodacom has been in talks with Netflix since at least 2014, when its parent company announced a partnership with the streaming video provider.

Joosub said the strength of its On Demand platform will be the ability to buy data along with the content.

“You will be able to buy a movie with or without the data included,” said Joosub.

Those with access to cheaper fixed connections at home or work can also download their videos there.

If you have to download the video over your mobile connection, Vodacom will make it more cost effective by including the data you need.

Before it gets Netflix, Vodacom On Demand will launch with the following services in 2017:

  • Subscription video on demand: ShowMax.
  • Transactional video on demand: BoxOffice, own licensed titles.
  • Live TV: DStv Now.

In addition to providing a platform for third-party services, Joosub said Vodacom On Demand will also offer bundles or boxed sets.

These bundles will feature movies chosen around a specific theme, like “comedies for the weekend”, or a set of TV shows.

Joosub said one of Vodacom’s strengths is being able to sell daily, weekly, and monthly bundles to a variety of market segments.

With Vodacom On Demand, they want to partner with third-party content providers to offer a similar kind of “bite-sized” value proposition for video content.

“Where we can’t [partner], we want to source that content to be able to provide those types of bundles.”
