The most popular mobile networks in South Africa

Effective Measure has released its South Africa Mobile Report 2017, which provides insight into the behaviour of people with mobile devices.
The report includes preferred smartphone brands, attitude towards mobile advertising, and what people use their phones for.
Effective Measure surveyed 4,993 mobile Internet users in South Africa from November 2016 to January 2017 for the report.
The research shows that in 2016, almost 70% of South Africans browsed the web on their mobile device.

The research showed that 63% of South Africans are on a mobile contract, while over half of them have Vodacom as their provider.
Most popular mobile phones in South Africa
The report shows that Samsung remains the dominant mobile phone brand in South Africa, with 40% market share.
Apple is second on 10%, followed by Huawei (9%), Nokia (6%), BlackBerry (6%), Sony (3%), and LG (2%).
What people do on their phones
83% of South Africans use WhatsApp on their mobile phone. SMS follows in popularity at 51%, followed by Facebook Messenger at 40%.
Making and receiving calls, and accessing the Internet were also popular activities.
Advertising on mobile
Almost half of South Africans will click on a mobile advertisement if it was advertising something they wanted or needed.
What people search for on mobile
The most common cellphone searches were for job information, directions and maps, and the weather. The least-common search was product reviews.
