Capitec is the only banking app to feature in the the ten most popular apps downloaded in South Africa.

This is according to the annual South African Social Media Landscape report launched on Monday by Ornico and research consultancy World Wide Worx (WWW).

The app featured in ninth on the overall list, behind social media networks Instagram, Facebook and WhatsApp but beating ride-sharing service Uber.

According to Arthur Goldstuck, MD of WWW, the study only focused on Android phone apps downloaded in the Google Play, as this is the largest smartphone market in South Africa.

Capitec’s popularity ranking and high downloads is likely due to the significant influx in customers the bank has seen over the past year.

In June it indicated that it had passed nine million retail customers – surpassing Absa to become the second biggest in the country using this metric.

In an August interview, Capitec chief executive Gerrie Fourie said that the bank is currently attracting 100,000 to 150,000 new customers each month.

“Most of them we’ve taken from other banks,” said Fourie.

“The economy is helping us – people have started questioning why they have to pay banking costs,” he said.
