MTN has the best mobile network in South Africa: research

Research by MyBroadband shows that MTN has the best mobile network in South Africa, and also tops the quality rankings in Gauteng, Cape Town, and Durban.

This is according to MyBroadband’s Q1 2018 Mobile Network Quality Report, which is based on 142,537 speed tests recorded through the MyBroadband Android Speed Test App between 1 January 2018 and 31 March 2018.

The report shows that South Africa had an average mobile download speed of 20.03Mbps during the period. MTN had the highest average download speed at 24.12Mbps, followed by Vodacom on 21.26Mbps, Cell C on 15.95Mbps, and Telkom on 15.20Mbps.

Best mobile network in South Africa

To determine the best mobile network in South Africa, a “Network Quality Score” was calculated for each network using a range of performance measurements.

The Network Quality Score out of 10 shows how the network performed in relation to other networks.

MTN topped the ranking with a Network Quality Score of 9.92, followed by Vodacom on 9.01, Cell C on 6.72, and Telkom on 6.54.

Best mobile network in Gauteng

MTN has the best network in Gauteng with a Network Quality Score of 9.99, followed by Vodacom on 9.34, Cell C on 7.37, and Telkom on 6.18.

Best mobile network in Cape Town

MTN has the best network in Cape Town with a Network Quality Score of 9.59, followed by Vodacom on 8.86, Telkom on 6.11, and Cell C on 5.82.

Best mobile network in Durban

MTN has the best network in Durban with a Network Quality Score of 9.93, followed by Vodacom on 6.77, Cell C on 5.98, and Telkom on 5.29.
