Red Bull Mobile subscriber numbers

With industry speculation suggesting that banking group FNB is in discussions with Cell C to become a mobile virtual network operator (MVNO), the operator has revealed the subscriber numbers for Red Bull Mobile.

Tagged as an MVNO, Red Bull Mobile launched in South Africa in February 2011, and is a joint partnership with Cell C. The current agreement gives Cell C exclusivity rights.

“Red Bull Mobile and Cell C have teamed up to bring you fantastic smartphones, competitive tariff plans and access to the World of Red Bull – all bundled into an all-inclusive package,” the group said.

“Red Bull Mobile has made steady progress since its launch in SA. The current base is in excess of 120,000 customers and continues to grow,” said Jose Dos Santos, Cell C chief commercial officer.

Since its launch in February, Red Bull Mobile has released one prepaid, four postpaid (post & hybrid) and two data propositions into the market.

The brand is also only available in Europe, in Austria, Belgium, Hungary, and Poland. And although currently available in Australia, this platform is expected to wind down.

“As of the 1st of September 2013, customers will no longer be able to recharge their account. Red Bull Mobile will continue to service existing customers until the customer’s current recharge or contract expires,” the group announced at the start of July.

Having surpassed 10 million customers in the second half of 2012, Cell C CEO, Alan Knott-Craig has expressed his desire to attain a quarter of South Africa’s mobile market share within four years from approximately 13%.

In June, Orange Horizons CEO, Sébastien Crozier told BusinessTech that French based global operator Orange wants to be an MVNO in South Africa.

South Africa’s only other current MVNO is Virgin Mobile South Africa, which is reliant on Cell C’s network, and says its subscriber base is approaching 400,000.
