BulkSMS MD, Pieter Streicher, is very optimistic about the SMS market, having said that he expects SMS growth to continue – boosted by new smartphone applications.
Streicher said that BulkSMS has seen their growth accelerate again, after a slowdown in 2008/2009 – with most of the growth coming from international operations.
“South Africa is a mature market in terms of A2P SMS messaging,” said Streicher, “South African mobiles probably receive the highest volume of A2P SMS messages globally (approaching 10 per MSISDN per month) mainly due to the adoption of SMS messaging by all major banks.”
Streicher also highlighted that the company expects its international growth to continue accelerating in 2012, especially with growth in smartphone applications using SMS.
“Currently we see new smartphone applications as the biggest new users of SMS messaging globally. In some cases, SMS messaging is used for very simple functions – such as verifying the mobile number of a phone,” concluded Streicher.
